New from Northern CA

I was hoping I could sneak by calling them pets. As I have seen mentioned before, PETCO carries pet chicken products and coops. I'll talk to the county and ask them about the covenants as they would be conducting arbitration if needs be. There is no HOA in my neighborhood, just a list of rules.

Welcome to BYC and good luck getting your chickens. A lot of us here on BYC consider our poultry as pets (and the eggs are a delicious bonus). We live in the country so no problem keeping chickens for us but we do consider all 15 of our girls as pets (and great ones they are too).

You might want to read this article to help prepare you for your discussion with the county (if you haven't read it already):

And if you would like to connect with other members in CA, you can find them through this link. You may be able to find out how some of them got the ok to keep chickens.

Nice to have you join us and please keep us posted on how it works out for you!

Good news and bad news... Bad news first. I have been in communication with a county employee who works in zone planning, turns out that chickens are not allowed in my zone. But, the good news is that the county is currently going through a zone revision. The draft is out now but won't be finalized until April, so I was told now is the time to send a letter or email asking them to consider allowing backyard chickens in our zone. I'll be doing some research into how to word such a letter, I'll take a look at the link @NorthFLChick posted, I was thinking of referencing city ordinances from San Francisco or Los Angeles where chickens are allowed.

Thanks!
