I have a pair of bobwhites and a pair of california quail. will they just lay in their cages or do i need to put something in there that will similate where they would nest.

And if so what does that look like?

No need for a nest. Both will lay their eggs straight on bare wire cage bottom when they are ready and the length of daylight hrs is right. A sand box will make it nicer thou. both for you and the birds....
