Hi! I'm Toya and I currently own two Plymouth Barred Rock hens named Pastry and Dumpling. The General lost his life protecting his ladies from a hawk. I became interested in raising chickens while on a field trip with my daughter. The owners of the park had two Jersey Giants to control the bugs. I was fascinated because we have (had) a problem with black widows. I spent the day looking at the ground and kicking the mulch, determined to find some multi-legged menace crawling around; but I did not find any. Those chickens had done their jobs marvelously! Like the park owners, I didn't want to use pesticides in my yard, but I want my daughters to be able to play outside without getting bit by a spider. So I came home and told my husband that I wanted to raise chickens, and the rest is history!

I love my birds! They are so much fun, and the benefits of keeping them are endless. They motivate me to go outside and do yard work, they help activate my compost pile, and I even watched them chase a baby snake out of our yard! This is the first year that I have not seen any widows in or around my house (I've only seen one earwig). I love my birds, I will always raise chickens. I can't imagine looking out of my window and not seeing them out there!

So glad you joined us. Love the names Pastry and Dumpling.

So sorry about your loss of The General.

Bet they ate the snake if it was small.

You have come to the right place to join the Chicken Lovers...

Welcome to BYC, Toya. Glad you decided to our flock. I love the name of your chickens. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) names our hens after Disney princesses. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children, and chickens definitely help cut down on the number of bugs.) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
