My first Straw bale garden

400

The garden looks completely ready to plant. It is certainly producing lots of healthy looking wheat grass. While I was initially disheartened by the amount of sprouting wheat seed, I have had a change of heart. The height of the garden makes weeding quick and easy. Since I'm planting only a bale at a time, it breaks the work up nicely. I'm assuming anything that's going to sprout should do so over the next week or so, so it shouldn't be an ongoing issue. The wheat grass has been going to my chicks who gobble it up. Peas, lettuce, spinach, and carrots going in this weekend. I suspect everything should grow well since the wheat grass certainly grows fast :)

The bales do cool off. We are at that point now where they are just big cheap planter boxes. The dark you see is that same layer of chicken compost I put on them at the start.

I left my bales out all winter letting them get soaked from the snow and spring rain, now I'm ready to start putting fertilizer on them and giving them a good soaking. How much water do you use for a "good soaking"? thanks.

Enough to get them good and wet! With them being out all winter, they should be pretty well on their way. Put the hose to them till you see water coming out the bottom. A soil thermometer will help you to know when they are conditioned and ready for planting. Helpful, but not necessary. You want them to heat up to at least 135* inside, then they will cool. They have to get cool enough that the heat willnot damage the plants. For more info, you should be able to find details if you do a google search. Or get the book from your library. Has some neat trellising ideas.
