What causes a chicken to lay eggs with only a membrane no shell? She has done this at least twice that I know of and it is usually at night when she is on the roost. And of course it breaks open when it hits the ground. THe chickens have access to oyster shells and also crunched up egg shells on the side. I don't have that problem with the other chickens.

How old is she? Does she ever lay a solidly shelled egg?
It may just a be a 'tune up' glitch...you can get alot of funky eggs in the first month or so of laying.
Soft eggs are often laid on the roost because they feel strange, are soft and cannot be controlled by the musculature.

If she's older, she could just have a major genetic malfunction.

she's only about a year and a half old. She laid solid eggs before she went into her molt. But she has not laid a solid egg since. Just the two that I know of without shells.???
Thanks for the reply

Just coming out of a molt is almost like the first onset of lay, you can get some funky eggs until they get it back in gear.

All you can so is watch and see what happens, then decide what to do.
