What is wrong with Yolk?!

After 2.5 years and maybe a thousand eggs, one of my girls produced this. Looks like something meaty in the yolk and it's pretty red. I've seen blood spots before, but never a case where the albumen is discolored. This one is like the color of tea.

I've done a five minute search and not been able to find any images from the internet of a bad yolk that looks quite like this.

I don't have a rooster.

The birds do free-range the yard.

I give the birds fresh water daily.

I don't use fertilizers on my lawn.

I use cracked corn, dumar layer pellets, and vegetable scraps for the birds.

There are no signs of injury in the coop, so I don't suspect cannabalism.

In prior years I went without any artificial heat. This year, whenever the temp drops to single digits, I use 1 heat lamp.

Aside from that, no artificial light.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what it is, but on a completely unrelated topic I just wanted to let you know that I can't make it to breakfast tomorrow....

(PS: In all seriousness, I hope someone more experienced will be able to help you. I am wondering if maybe there was a burst blood vessel at some point during egg formation...? My best wishes to you.)

I would say that is just a combo of burst blood vessel and a piece of tissue released with ova.
Tea color is just oxidized blood.

What is breed and age of hen that laid this?

The bird that laid the egg is approximately 2 years old. I believe it was one of my RI Reds.

I was wondering if the egg may have had a slight crack in it that wasn't noticed by me when I collected the eggs. If it did have a crack, maybe the whole thing just kind of spoiled.

I cracked open an egg that looked similar a few weeks ago. The albumin was tinted red and there was a very small piece of something that might have been tissue. Luckily the egg was intended for the dog, anyway, and he ate it without complaint. The hen who laid the egg also had an episode or two of diarrhea at the same time, but is healthy otherwise.

Nothing necessarily wrong, keep an eye out for more. Blood vessel issue is my opinion.

Have they been laying long this Spring?
