Gapeworm

Hi Kathy,

Day 5. She won't get her final dosage until this evening. But I've seen little to no improvement. It appears better at times but then she'll cough/squeak and I'll see open mouth breathing. She continues to eat, drink, remain active, etc. You wouldn't know anything was wrong if it wasn't for the coughing or open mouth breathing. She's laying as well. She'll skip a day here and there but the weather hasn't been the best, with many overcast/clouding days.

You mentioned Baytril above. I treated her with Tylan soluable before switching to the Safeguard, thinking it was a respiratory infection. At this point I would think if this was an infection of sorts I would be seeing a decrease in appetite, fluid intake, activity, and/or reduction in eggs.

I'm at a loss of what to try next.

Any thoughts, comments, ideas are welcomed!

Gapeworms are not that common in chickens, but it never hurts to worm them.

Tylan only works on a limited number of bacteria. You could try another round, but this time find a way to give it orally twice a day instead of in the water.
