(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Well, I'm not entirely new, but it's been so long that I'm a RE-newbie!
I left my last chicken in the care of a friend of my family, a woman with a lovely tiny flock, about fourteen years ago. I would be moving to the city (apartments don't like chickens) and my Big Girl's friend Baby Girl had just passed, so I didn't want her to be lonely. I would get the occasional update for several years. I have missed having chickens sing to me ever since.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now, I don't have any. I'm packing up my things and moving out of my Family's (ex husband, stepdaughter, roommates and their children) house in the city of Citrus Heights, to return to my family's (deceased grandfather's property, now in trust to my adult son) rural-ish tinyfarm at the edges of Colusa county. Once I'm back there, I'll be buying chicks - about a week into April!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Big Girl was a white leghorn who "got away" in my mother's yard as a young pullet. I thought she'd been eaten by whatever was coming into the yard to strangle the others at night. A year later, I would be back to visit my mother and find her - huge and grown and docile as ever - watching me from the next door neighbor's side yard! She was trying to find her way back through the fence, apparently having grown herself up on the block of houses around us! She accepted my picking her up with all the grace of a queen, and ride home with me to the property. There, she met Baby Girl - a young Rhode Island Red who, through becoming another only survivor, had become a house pet. Baby thought she was a parrot, I swear. She spent nights in a small animal cage on a table in the main living area, and spent her days in my lap or on a split log perch at the top of her cage. I miss hearing her sing to me and feeling her weight smack me as she divebombed for the small of my back as I read on the couch.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
If I remember right, I found it through a search for... Wait for it… backyard chickens. LOL At the time, I was hunting for laws in my area about chicken keeping. I wanted to own a couple in the nice, grassy back yard of our house.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, cooking, jewelry making, gardening for food and pollinators, and collecting Build a Bears.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Let's see… I'm disabled, so my entire day is free to work around the property and do research online. Of my family, I will be moving onto the property with my aunt and uncle, who have been living there but did to declining health, have been needing help. My son lives with my mother to be in the city he grew up in, and have the most steady support with his issues (he had a rough birth and has several developmental problems as a result, and also falls in the autism spectrum). My daughter (step) is six, and will be living here (city) with her parents - of course - but will be coming out to visit me and the animals as frequently as we can pull it off. My aunt has a German shepherd mix, who is entirely untrained, so I will have my work cut out teaching him manners.
