how old is too old to butcher?

I sure was happy to find this thread. I have some Barred Rock hens that are about 18 months old and my other half is looking forward to having them fill the freezer. But I must say that the roosters we butchered, as well as the egg-eating hen who also pecked everyone else's feet, were just plain tough. The roosters were about 6 months old. I will admit that I am pretty new to this part of raising chickens and tough chicken is not one of my favorite dishes. Suggestions and advice are welcome!

Invest in a pressure canner and learn to preserve your meats by canning them. Canning makes any meat tender, frees up your freezer space and enables you to can up chicken stock as well. Makes for quick, nutritious, flavorful meals...with tender meat no matter the age of the chicken.

You could crock pot them or even pressure cook them to get them tender. Even add spices if you want and some onions, carrots and celery. You could then freeze in containers with some juices or pressure can them to save freezer space. Best investment ever was my pressure cooker and pressure canner.

It's never too late. You can eat any breed of any gender of any age. You just have to learn how to cook different meats properly! My fellow Americans, everything need not be grilled...
