Hello everyone,

We live in Northern Colorado and are planning getting some backyard chickens, hopefully very soon.

I've been doing some research on breeds and such but MAN there's a lot of choices. Feeling a bit overwhelmed!

So I'm requesting some guidance from people who know more that we do about this and hope to be steered in the right direction.

It's almost April so is it too late to get chicks? (We want eggs).

Should we start with adults? Sub adults?

What breeds can be found around here locally? Or will we need to order them? (looking for hardy and friendly chickens).

Is there a "best" chicken for this region?

Thanks very much in advance!

Marcus

So glad you have joined us.

I would suggest you question those in your area. Here's a link to the Colorado "where am I, where are you" thread:

Most places have baby chicks now. I don't know what breeds will meet your needs, but if you can get sexed baby chicks, you will love the experience of raising them.

Feel free to ask questions we're here to help.

Good luck on your decision and locating the breeds you elect.

Welcome to BYC, Marcus. Glad you decided join our flock. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine which breed is best for you (whether or not you get your chicks from MM, the tool is still very useful). Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

Wow you live in Loveland Colorado!? I live in Estes Park so only an hour away.
