Golden Cuckoo Maran hen or roo?

I have a week old GCM that looks very much like a roo to me based on internet research.
Can anybody help based on the pics? The breeder says it can still be a girl hen even it is not brown (he was very light and grey as a day old chick..)

I would go by what the breeder says as he is familiar with his lines.

I had to double check my facts as I haven't raised GCM (only BCM with possibility of Blue and Splash), but GCM is not autosexing...the males TEND to be darker than the females, but not always.

Many lines of autosexing breeds have some questionable chicks who don't follow the rule distinctions (Rhodebars, for example, can have Wheaten throw backs which can be girl or boy...my breeder's experience in her line is that the Wheaten usually is a boy...but not always).

So I would trust your breeder and wait it out. Look for other signs. Marans typically broadcast with the comb pretty early. Compare them to each other, and the one that is getting a large comb fast, that will be your roo.

My light GCM chick is now growing a rowel, and is getting ahead of the brown GCM chick which looks still more like a pullet in both feathering and size.
This is the latest pick. I real life it is much more brave :), but hates being take out of the box alone..




Based on the latest developments it looks like the GCM is somewhat autosexing, at least when it comes to the light grey colored chicks, and they are cockerels with very high probability. The breeder meanwhile figured that what she thought to be a pullet is actually a cockerel, and is doing further experiments with the light grey ones. I might have gotten the last 98% roo as straight run..
