More chunneling fodder!

Here is a picture of my chunnel. This is for an extra coop I have for broody breaking or hospital. We converted on old shed that was on the property. They have a run out back but we added this in case they wanted to be up front and see the rest of the flock free-ranging. It works great against a fence. Just bend the hardware cloth over and add sections. Please



ignore the berries covered in chicken wire. It is the only way we can grow anything near the chickens! LOL

It is flexible and easy to move. I moved half of the chunnel a couple of feet over today just to provide some fresh turf to the chickens. If the ground is not too rocky or messy it is possible to jam the wire prongs into the ground for extra stability but I don't bother too much with that.

Great! Do you find the they stick their heads thru the 2x4 fencing to graze outside the chunnel?

50 inches of fence with a 24 wide 'bottom' gives about an 18" height....laid it out in cadd.....my rooster wouldn't fit.
 
aart, yes they stick their heads through to graze. Popped off the chunnel end cap one day so I had to secure it better. No cadd here, just guesswork. Let me know if you come up with dimensions that better suit a rooster. (I don't have a rooster.)

I use 2x4 fencing in my run, they keep the grass chewed back about 6" from the wall, luckily no head plucking day predators...yet.

These are the numbers I'm working with, excuse the 2 decimal places - I usually do machine design.
I started with your 2 foot diameter/base pipe and went from there for your 50" of fencing.
My rooster is 24" tall....but the taller you go on the side walls, the floppier the whole thing might become.




I haven't played with chunnels yet, but they definitely intrigue me and one day I will make some.
I like your design best from what I've seen so far.
 
This looks like just what I need and a Building Level my limited skills can handle! Would 14 gauge fencing work for this or do you need a heavier gauge to maintain the hoop shape? Thanks! Excited to get my chickens outdoors and eating my weeds!
 
Just added 40 feet of chunnel yesterday using the 5' x 100' welded wire available from Tractor Supply. Took me about an hour. I have increased the dimensions a bit, now using two 30-inch pieces of pvc pipe for each 60" x 60" piece of welded wire. I move the chunnel about once a week for fresh grazing. This is "chunnel-light" that will (usually) keep the chickens in and the hawks out. I don't think it will protect too well from foxes or mink :(
