Recently we lost a hen when she was in the yard, and then a huge Wellsummer rooster when something literally tore open their pen, pulling out staples and twisting the wire back.
Yesterday we heard a terrible ruckus about 8 am and looked out to see a fox furiously circling their pen. My son ran out with his gun but wasn't able to shoot it. We've been setting out this trap which he sets off every night, taking the food but getting away. And then last night he completely bent back the door, breaking the whole thing, and got away.

I hate keeping my hens and roo locked up every day but this fox is relentless. Besides staking my son out with his gun to watch the pen, how can we catch this bugger?

Guess that's what we'll do, then.

I hate killing animals, but really we have no choice here.

Do you have a dog? It does not take much of a dog to convince fox not to come back. If fox like mine then it will be so focused on getting birds that dog will be able to get it from behind.

Yes, I have an inside dog but she is not the brightest crayon in the box, and she's afraid of everything.

some will say cruel, but if it's your birds or a predator, you do what you have to do. If there is no danger to domestics or people then in a situation like this I would set up a couple leg snap traps right around the perimeter of the pen. Disguise them a bit by digging a little dirt away and set them down in the shallow dug out bowl. Cover with a little grass or leaves. You will get him in a day if you do this. Only do this when you know you have an immediate problem visitor and you will be around to monitor.
