Hello all. I've been sucked into the craze of chickens. I grew up with them and my parents still have some but I want my own. I will be receiving my first 2 polish hens in May and can't wait. So my first questions is placing the coop. I am connecting a rabbit hutch to a playhouse and using both for inside protection and the rabbit hutch for extra outside space when I can't let them in yard. But what my problem is the outside area will be on pea gravel. Do I need to move this and put sand down? Any help is very welcome.

Congrats on the soon to be new Polish hens!! As for pea gravel, it can be sharp on the pads of the birds feet and hard to clean all the poop from. But some people do use it. If you live in a wet moist climate, the gravel may harbor bacteria and parasites being wet all the time. I use sand in my coop, run and even in the nest boxes! I am addicted to the stuff!! LOL It is very easy to maintain, repels flies, absorbs the smells, and what I like is during the summer heat, you can hose it down and it keeps the birds incredibly cool! Cool feet mean cooler birds.

Here is a nice thread on sand if you want more info...https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/444759/got-sand-you-should

Enjoy this new journey you are on! If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask around the forums. Welcome to our flock!

Glad you have joined us.

Agree with TwoCrows, I have sand in run, coop and nest boxes and it is easy to sift the poop and never had any smell issues.

But resources from other sites made me expect always clean feet…not always true :) but plenty of space for sand baths.
