Hi all i was sitting in my garden last night watching my chickens they all seem very happy but i cant stop wondering if i have to many hen for the space i have
I have got 8 hens in a run of 11 feet square i clean it every day and they seem happy and they are all laying eggs just think maybe i need to downsize a bit any advice would be much appreciated

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. You definitely need to downsize (or else expand the size of your run). The bare minimum space requirement for chickens is a floor area of 4 sq. ft. per bird for the coop (not counting the space taken up by the nest boxes) and 10 sq. ft. per bird for the run. With 8 hens you need a run of at least 80 sq. ft. An 11 sq. ft. run should only have 1 chicken in it. And keep in mind these are bare minimums; more is better. At some point those overcrowded conditions are going to create aggression, fights, biting and feather plucking, and perhaps even cannibalism among your flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in downsizing or increasing the size of your run (or both).

Hello,
My wife and i are getting ready to move from an appartment in the city and out to a small outlying town where we are going to start raising backyard chickens. We figured we needed all the help we could get.

X2 on Michael Oshay's advice. Either expand the coop/run or downsize the flock are your decisions to make. I see you have been welcomed before, and you should begin posting under the other forums or you will continue to get welcomes :)

glad you have joined us and good luck on your plans to move and get your own flock. I would suggest you explore the Learning Center Articles - there's a lot of information to help you get started with your plans and learn how to raise and care for chickens.

I would suggest you start a new thread under New Members to get a proper welcoming from others.
