Hello all,
New to the site, had chickens about a year now. Started with 8 Buff Orpingtons and recently added 8 EE, 6 Gold sexlinks, 6 Barred Rocks, 2 Black Australorp, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 4 Light Brahma cross that we hatched and for the time being 28 (down from 30) Red Rangers. Nice big 12x24 coop and attached 50x50 covered run. Rangers are inside now, but will be going in Salatin style tractor when they feather out a bit more. Long term goal is to find and concentrate on a good dual purpose breed that lays well and grows fast enough to make a 14 week old cockerel worth butchering.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! What a lovely flock you have there and sounds a great set up with your coop and run. I love incubating and hatching eggs. Good luck with your plans for a dual purpose bird.
Hope you enjoy BYC I am sure you will everyone here to help with any questions you may have the forum is very diverse with a section for all things poultry.
Enjoy the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. You have a nice mixed flock. Golden Sex Link is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are laying machines. You should be getting loads of eggs from those 6 girls. If you are able to find a dual purpose breed that is really worth butchering at 14 weeks, I would be interested to know which breed it is. I've been raising chickens for 50 years and in my experience, if both eggs and meat are a priority, the best way to go is with two separate birds; White Leghorns or Sex Links for eggs (depending on whether you want white or brown eggs) and Cornish cross for meat. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in your search for the perfect dual purpose breed.

So glad you could join or flock!

Thanks all for the well wishes! Just to clarify, I am not looking for CX and Leghorn performance from the same bird. Just a decent layer with better meat production than is available from hatchery or show stock.

You're welcome, and good luck with your search.)

Well hello and welcome neighbor! We live in Spokane for the moment trying to get moved into our place in Clayton. Your chicken setup puts mine to shame and everyone likes to tease that I have a chicken mansion! :) How old are your Australorps? I bought some as chicks from a lady down the road and they weren't too bad as a dual purpose. Of course, I haven't put any on the dinner table since I can't seem to get the nerve to butcher any but she says they dress out pretty nice. The last round of pullets we bought included a New Hampshire Red and she plumped up quick! Almost doubled in size compared to the others. I really can't attest to her egg laying qualities since we also have a mixed flock and I'm never sure who laid which egg (with a couple exceptions). But maybe a breed worth looking into. At any rate, good luck and nice to meet a neighbor!
