About three weeks ago I bought 8 1 week old keets and put them in a good size brooder but now unless I keep some chicken wire over the top they are jumping out and pooping all over my kitchen. I have a coop with a temporary run built that is ready to use and I'm wondering at a month old if I can put them outside in the coop/run without a heat lamp. It's around 70 degrees during the day where I live and in the low 40s at night. I don't currently have the heat lamp on them now inside my house and they're doing fine but I'm worried that since it gets somewhat cold at night they'd freeze. Can I put them outside so they can have more room to move?

I am just getting back on here and taking a look at some info. I came across your ? I am raising keets right now. I live in Phoenix area. Decent weather day and night.
They need heat to survive those kinds of temps at night. The day temps are ok, but a momma would sit on them to warm, at least a hen would. Any young bird, until feathered, needs heat source. Don't chance it and lose them. I run an extension cord to my brooder and have heat available. I also raise them in a spare bathtub and have heat lamp over them. I use a piece of wood propped across the tub to provide cooler area for them. Otherwise, keep them inside with chicken wire over them to keep them contained.

Just remember the 5 degree rule. Reduce by 5 degrees every week.

Having one of those digital thermometers is great. $10 at box store, WM.

If they are making a ruckus, they are probably cold. Panting is not good, so may be too hot. I usually raise my heat lamp as they get older or I have an area that is shaded so the ones that need to get out of heat source can and the ones that want more heat can get that too. This is also a way to tell they are ready for less heat.
You don't want them to huddle as they can suffocate each other. Watch them. If they fan out away from heat, they are too hot...if they are huddled under the heat they are cold. You want them spaced and sprawled out, comfy and quiet...lol

Good luck.

The weather warmed to low 80s during the day and mid to high 50s at night so I put em out in their temp coop last night and checked on the mince around midnight and they were doing very well and checked on them again this morning and they were chirping away for me to let them outside into their run
