My dog killed my chicks

Our Chihuahua is fine with the chickens. Our beagle just stares. He's getting better, but we still don't let him get close. We're always out with him, and keep him on a lead when the girls are free ranging.

I have a male doxie that gets chased by my Redstars. He thought he was going to chase them but got pecked in the nose instead. Sense then he stays 30 yards or more away from all chickens whenever he's out with them. I also have a female leapord catahoula dog that pheasant hunts with me but has no interest what so ever in the chickens. The only chicken molester I have is the shih tzu who likes to run down and hump the chickens..... its all about the dogs individual personality in my opinion.

Exactly - unfortunately you have a breed that is going to be incompatible with prey animals - your best approach is prevention of any and all interaction between the dog and the birds and, as you have seen, his breeding is such that that prevention requires extra steps.  His small size will in no way reduce the risk to adult birds.

I have a dachshund, 2 chihuahuas & 1 chiweenie. My hens and 4 dogs free range all day every day together with no problems.

I posted in April how my doxie made me nervous around my pullets. He has changed a lot since then. Now they all free range together, he also alerts us when the girls are tresspassing onto my neighbors property or going down the driveway towards the street. (i love on a dead end).
The thing that changed his mind was when he stuck his nose into the run and my black JG pecked him in his nose. That was a funny sight. Other than the occassional run through the flock to get them going, he is a very good guardian of the flock....unless there is a frog in site. Then it is game on!!!
