I am new to this site and excited to be here I only have a small flock right now 4 hens 2 roosters I wanted to hatch more eggs this year but do not want to take the chance on having more males. So I think I will just go buy some hens. We have beautiful chanceler pheasant roosters and to hens the other 2 reds we lost one this yr to our neighbourhood fox well that about explains my little flock. I was brought to this site to find out if there are other ways to cull as I get older I just do not think I have it in me to kill so u guess they will have to die of old age. They are happy free range birds so life is good for them

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. You could always get Black or Red Link chicks which can be sexed by color from hatching. Not only would you be sure of getting only pullets that way, but they are hardy, egg laying machines, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

glad you have joined us. But, sorry about the loss, it is hard to lose even one, but that is the risk of free ranging. Hope you can figure a way to protect the rest from the fox.

I totally agree with you about not being able to voluntarily sacrifice even one of my small backyard flock.

We plan to have an "old hen home" when mine get old :)

Thank you everyone I have learned a lot on here already this is awesome. I have been away from livestock and farm life to long. It's good to be home!!!
