Pipd's Peeps!

So glad all your birds are safe! Nice to see Rueben stepping it up! Is he a paint? And how can he see predators with his crest (unless you trim it?)? Your floral selection is lovely. Seriously, I can't pick a favorite because they are all so beautiful!

Taking a break from studying to reply. I'm not dawdling in the least bit! Actually I did find out today that I only have two tests this week, not the three that I thought I did, so maybe I am dawdling a bit... Anyway...

Yep, Reuben's a paint Silkie. His previous owner also said that he could be champagne as well, but she wasn't sure if it was that or if his feathers were dirty. :) I've never trimmed his crest, but was thinking about it after yesterday! Not sure how he saw the hawk coming, but he definitely stepped up!

I'm definitely happy with the flowers, too. Much happier than I think I would have been if I got exactly what I was planning to. I'm thinking of getting a second Platycodon tomorrow after class to go along with the first. It's just so pretty! :love

Pipd your birds all seem so nice! And little crashie is so adorable!:)

Aw, thanks! Crash is an adorable little squirt, if a bit spoiled. ;)

Speaking of her, I've devised a new plan to get her more comfortable outside! Instead of taking her outside to a pen and trying to leave her, I've been taking her outside to a big pool. She used to get bath time in the tub when she was small and it was about her favorite thing, but since she has had a little tub outside, I haven't been giving her baths inside. Well, she hates that little tub outside and never used it, so taking her out to a bigger pool has kind of replaced bath time, and she loves it! I'm thinking with this that she'll start seeing outside time as more like bath time, something to get excited for, and then maybe I can transition her to a pen with a pool so she can play for a while without me. :fl That's what I'm really, really hoping for, anyway!

I really like your birds. I will defiantly be following this thread!

Aw, thanks! :) Welcome!

Yep, I went and did it, got a second Platycodon on the way home. :D They had one that had a 'balloon' on it and I was so excited to see it pop open and bloom! Well, it apparently bloomed in the back seat on the way home! :barnie So I guess it'll be next year on that.

Well, looks like we're down a Guinea boy. :/ I'm not really sad about it, just frustrated. I free range just a few of them every day instead of all of them like the chickens, because if all of them are let out, they wander off. Well, of the ones I let out yesterday, three of them could not figure out how to get through the WIDE OPEN, HUMAN-SIZED DOOR last night, instead deciding to take off into the woods. Because Guineas are just brilliant like that. :he One of them treed himself WAY WAY WAY out of reach, and the other two went opposite directions and into such thick thorn bushes that I couldn't follow them. Sigh.

Today, two of them are back. The third, I haven't seen any sign of and he's not making any noise out there if he's still alive. Still trying to figure out who it was, but I think it was one of the two oldest, the one that didn't have a name. All of the ones that I can actually tell apart are still here; Handsome and Blind-Eye were the two that came back, and Mama's Boy, Short Stuff, Crooked Legs, Curly (the other of the two oldest), Low Man, and both hens are still here. I suppose he may come back, but it seems slim. We have an awful lot of raccoons in our woods...
So anyway, that was my frustration for the week. :barnie

Only other thing worth mentioning is that I've had to separate Reuben out again because he's after poor Margie. He is out where he can keep an eye on the sky for the girls, but can't actually get to them, so hopefully he can keep up guard duty still. I really have faith that he'll be a good flock protector, he just needs to get out of his hormone-pumped adolescence and start treating ALL of my girls right!

That's too bad your guineas got away, hopefully that one will come back. Also sorry about Rueben.:( We had to separate our rooster too like that when he would go after our red star, he was young too though.

I'm pretty sure Reuben will sort himself out with age. He has the right attitude for it, he just seems to have hit that time in his life when the hormones are raging and he can't control himself. My little Cochin bantam boy, Po, went through this as well, though admittedly not as focused on one single hen, but he was much better behaved after he had the chance to cool his heels in confinement for some time. Whatever it takes. :)

The Guinea boy has not shown up yet, and I think it's pretty safe to say at this point that something got him. It's just too quiet out in the woods for a Guinea to be wandering around out there. :/ I was wrong about which one; it was one of the younger Guineas that vanished. Both older boys are still present. I thought, since the one that vanished was one of the two I couldn't tell apart, that I might as well name the remaining unnamed Guinea, but then I realized that he and Low Man are nearly identical, the only distinguishing feature being feather quality; Low Man frequently has broken feathers because, as his name implies, he is the low man of the flock. So I guess they will just be the flat-wattle twins. I don't even know.

I just had to catch my Fayoumi, Marama, who had jumped the fence into the NO CHICKEN ZONE, otherwise known as the driveway. She caught one of the driveway puddle frogs ( :( ), and thought I was going to take it from her. A game of chicken football ensued, with me as an unwilling player.

I finally caught her after just letting her finish her froggy treat, after which she panicked and pooped down my side. :/ I sat with her to calm her down, and was sassed by the sassiest mouth of the flock. I then returned her to where she belonged, which was cause for more sassing. Oh, Marama.

I wish I could spend more time with my girls. Every time I do, they remind me why I adore them. Sigh. But it won't be too much longer before I'm out of school, and maybe then I'll have a little more free time for them besides what I can sneak in the morning and evening. :)
