We have no chickens of other farm animals at present. We would like to have chickens, goats, and a horse or two to start our little ranch. We will add more as our knowledge grows. We call it ranch because that's what my mom in-law called our soon to be homestead before she passed.
We are in learner mode and need good advice on planning our ranch. We are hoping To get chickens by July. Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.
We live in NC along the coast.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. I highly recommend the Learning Center, as the best place to start a chicken education. Then you may want to check out the coops section

Rule of thumb is to allow 4-5 sq.feet per bird in the coop (not including nest boxes and roosts). For the outdoor run, there should be 10 sq.feet per bird. Allowing enough space is very important. Chickens get cranky when they are crowded and resort to fighting, feather pecking and at extreme cannibalism.

You may want to post on your state thread to check for chicken folks living near you., who could give you specific advice like breeds that do best in your climate, best feed stores, etc.

Good morning, welcome to BYC!

Chickens are a good place to start when you get into farm/ranch animals. Have you decided what breed(s) you want to get? If you need some help choosing which ones will best suit your purposes, here are a couple of "chick selector" links that may help:

Good luck to you, starting up a new place is exciting. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
