Live on some acreage in South Texas, thought the grandkids should get a chance to raise chickens, so here we are. New to this whole chicken things, but so far so good. Retired computer geek, I have built furniture, cars, a couple of houses, and a plane. Never built a chicken coop. Going for the tractor concept to move around the yard. Lots of space but free ranging would just feed the numerous predators in our area. Been reading on this site for a while, thought I should jump in. I will let you know how it goes. We have 6 chicks that my daughter got at the local feed store on Easter. Built a nice size brooder but they are ready for a proper coop so I am starting the planning and building .

BOY, could we all use a computer geek. So many of us, including oldies like me, have a million computer glitches & don't know what to do. We are so addicted to BYC, we are lost when the computers are down. Maybe you could start a new thread called " Certified Computer Expert (sounds so much better than Geek). You'd be swamped with people needing help. Oops sorry, I forgot you are retired, you'd have enough already.

My brother is a systems security analyst and my son a programmer and me, I'm the black sheep in the family, still struggling on the internet. Welcome to Backyard chickens - hope you enjoy it as much as we.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas. Fortunately for us we do have one computer geek in our family; my son.) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our coop section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks and in getting your coop built.

Welcome to BYC!

You and the grandkids should have a lot of fun raising chickens. Children and chickens just seem to go together

What breed of chicks do you have?

Sometimes it is helpful to check in with members more local to you so if you would like to chat with other Texans, you can find them here:

Good luck to you and the grands with the new flock!

and congratulations on you new flock.

Sounds like building a coop will be a cake walk with your experience. My DH had only experience building motorcycles - no help in coop design :)

Would love to see your coop in progress.
