I have a 6 week old Orpington chick who up until recently had a small 'thing' on his back about where it joins the neck and wing. It's bare and looked a little puffy there. When he is excited, it would kind of pulse. Also, he has very few feathers and is the size of a 3 week old chick.

Today I came home from work and the 'thing' looks like there's a balloon in there!

Other than that, he acts completely normal. He eats and drinks fine and is just as active as the other chicks.

Help! What is it? Can it be fixed and can he be saved?

I think you might be right about it being a ruptured air sack. We used a syringe to let the air out. Weird thing is, it went down and then filled right back up. I did inject antibiotics into it before putting him back in the brooder.

There is the tail end of another chick to the right. I think you can see he still has a lot of down. Only his wings really have any feathers.

PLEASE tell me what happened, this has just shown up on my baby quail!!!
You're going to want to pierce the bump and let the air out, like they did.
Hopefully they'll post again and let you know if it ever went down permanently, and how they continued treatment.
Good luck with your quail.

Unfortunately, the chick didn't make it. It kept coming back and was getting worse. I suspect there was more going on than this. Even before he got the bubble, he was smaller than all the other chicks of the same age and still had most of his down where the other chicks were mostly feathered out.

Hopefully your little chick has a better outcome.
