I have a shed that is going to be my chicken's house, however, I would like to start them in there as well (I will have 140 chicks and the baby playpen in the garage isn't going to cut it for that many!). Only problem is we have lots of cats that would love to have an easy live dinner despite being fed cat food 2x a day. The shed can be shut, however, it is a metal shed, so there wouldn't be any light except the heat lamp (no windows) and it might get pretty hot (it is June here and it has already gotten to the 80s). So is there a barrier or something I could build for the chicks so the cats don't get to them. I don't want to close it off completely (ie have solid walls around them) as they need ventilation. What would you recommend to keep the chicks safe from cats in a shed? Not sure if I want them on the floor or maybe build something that they will be off the ground.

In the doorway. replace door with screen door. If you can make your own, use 1/2 hardware cloth in a wood frame. Easy to make. Cut out some window style openings in wall and also install screens. With that large quantity of chickens. you have some work ahead of you for sure. Cats see baby chicks as uncooked chicken nuggets. Once chickens grow to maturity, then they are usually left alone. I have small bantams, and my cats do not bother them. Cats were licking their chops once when I had baby chicks. When they grew, all were safe. Now I am speaking for MOST cats ,, NOT ALL CATS.. Look at my avitar and all is plain.
WISHING YOU BEST
