We had six 10 week old chicks outside in the coop and 4 seven week old chicks inside in the brooder. New chicks are being delivered tomorrow. We have been getting them outside daily together so they can get use to each other before integrating them into the coop together.
Our Black Star (10 weeks) was completely healthy all day on Wednesday and Thursday morning. Thursday, we had extremely bad thunderstorms and she died immediately after the first couple of loud sounds of the storm. No signs and symptoms. We thought maybe she had a heart attack.
This morning, our Buff Orpington (10 weeks), seemed off. She was laying on the ground and in the corner away from the others. This afternoon, we noticed a lot of bloody stools from her. Came here to research, talked to the hatchery we got them from, and went to the store to get Corid powder (the only thing they had). We started all of our chickens on Corid (1 and a half tsp. per gallon of water) since they are together daily. We changed out all of their bedding, feed, and washed all of their feed/watering containers.
Our Buff Orpington started eating and drinking tonight, which seems like a good sign.
Questions:
1. Did we do the right thing by treating them ALL with 1 and a half tsp. of Corid per gallon of water?
2. Is there anything else we should be doing?
3. Did our Black Star die from Coccidiosis, even though she didn't seem to have any signs or symptoms of it?
4. What do we do about the new baby chicks that are arriving tomorrow?
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions!
