Hi, I'm new to keeping chickens and we have a silkie hen that just started laying. Yesterday I purchased another "hen" on craigslist but when I brought her home she was a little bigger than mine. Also my hen doesn't really like the new one and keeps chasing it away. I can't find any spurs or anything but maybe it's still too young. Can someone help me determine the sex of this chicken please?

Thanks, kind of what I'm thinking. It hasn't crowed or anything yet. But I think it's going to have to be returned. No roosters allowed here.

If you cant have roosters I would definitely gove back unelss they can show you DNA testing etc. While it could still be a hen...there are too many rooster characteristics that make it umcomfortable to believe its a hen

Most cockerels begin crowing at about 4-5 months, but sometimes it's quite a while longer before they begin crowing, and on rare occasions it can be nearly a year.

Thanks, believe it or not it just crowed twice this morning. So unfortunately he has to go. Now I have to try to find another hen so my daughter's not so upset.
