new to this site. got my chicks about a month ago. had my dog play catch with a couple of them so I went out and got a couple more. my roo is about 2 weeks older than the bunch the newest ones are about 2 weeks old. I am from Louisiana and right now it is HOT here. I have seen my chicks under my rosemary bush panting. other than all the water and areas of shade what can I do to keep them cool?

Sorry for your loss. It's BEST if dogs and chickens never meet. Dogs + chickens= DEAD chickens. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog.

Sorry for your loss.

@drumstick diva makes an important point about dogs and chickens. This is a frequent situation with a dog that isn't specifically trained to be around poultry, unfortunately. Hope he doesn't have access to the birds any more.

Good luck to you with your flock.

the thing is the dog that weighs 150 pounds never bother the chicks. he may follow them as if he were herding them. but when he sits stills or is just laying down, the chicks will go and sit by him!!

Welcome to BYC...

Sorry about your loss.

Do you have an electronic brain for your dog? I used them when I first got chickens, it kept the chickens safe. I also used a wired/wireless fence on them.

I allow my dogs and birds to get together, and they do fine. BUT I do not trust them completely, they are dogs..

Mine wear a muzzle when I put them outside now, but it has nothing to do with the chickens safety. My dogs think chicken poop is a delicacy and eggs not found in a nest box should be eaten by them....hence the muzzles.

I am a little worried about a chickadee attacking them when muzzled, but if they refuse to learn they deserve what they get......
