Hello everyone I have four Rhode Island red hens and a domineqer rooster I have been gathering my eggs for a few years everyday but have decided to try and hatch some since I have a hen that is wanting to set on them. My question is this she sets on them for quite some time several weeks and then I go to check on her and some of the eggs have been broken and are rotten. How do I keep the eggs from rotting before they hatch is there something I am doing wrong or what plZ help thanks

Sounds like either the embryos died early or that the rooster isn't doing his job and maybe her eggs weren't fertile. Has he been a father before? The rotting eggs are "stink eggs," they can explode and spread bacteria everywhere.

Hey is is a first time father my hen did hatch two earlier but the other hens killed them think I may try another rooster and I need to clean my hen house really good

Yes, clean that hen house, and try marking your eggs with dates. You will know how old they are.
Take a sniff every now and again, trust me, you will know when one is not good!
I had a first time rooster, my very first rooster in fact this summer..just a while ago. I am at this min. hatching some of his eggs. Excited too, because I had to place him. Too loud for a neighborhood. :(

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Good luck getting some fertile eggs for chicks.

Nice to have you here!

glad you have joined us.

I have no experience hatching, you should explore the forums on hatching eggs and consider posting questions there to get more suggestions.

But I do know that most separate a brooding hen and chicks from the rest of the flock to protect them from the flock members.

So sorry about the loss of those 2 babies, wishing you better luck with future hatches.
