I use 20 mule team borax. During the spring, I sprinkle it in the house, shoving all critters out, around mop boards, cracks in the floors, under and on top of the carpet. Then sweeping it up or vacume the rug, it leaves enough residue on the floor to allow ants, fleas, silver fish etc to clean it off their feet, causing extreme indigestion (jk I think...) they take it home, and kills em all.
As for outdoors, I do the same thing around the yard, if it gets to thick, I'll take a rake and smoosh it around.
Borax does not harm animals or people. If you have mounds of ants, make sure you do around them then they will track it in.
