I’m a new chicken owner and I don’t know much about them, doing my best to learn. We got week old chickens from my sons school after they did the egg cycle. I’m not sure what breed they are. I’m also so worried about my little runt, she’s the sweetest but about half the size of the other chicks. She has splayed leg when we got her, so we’re trying to correct it. She eats and drinks pretty well but she gets sleepy easily and she seems to try to stay away from the clutch, I’m assuming so she doesn’t get picked on. They seem to treat her fine, I’m just worried about her likelihood of survival.

Hi, welcome to BYC!
I'm not sure what the chicks are. Since they were hatched at school, and those hatches are generally from donated eggs, you probably have barnyard mix. Nothing wrong with that-they are my favorites.

Have you tried electrolytes for the littlest one? You can get them at your local farm store. When I have a runt I try to give them a little scrambled egg each day. (Be sure to give them access to chick grit if you feed anything beside chick feed.)
If you do this, keep fresh plain water available also.
Good luck with your new flock!

I have given them a gallon of vitamin/electrolyte water. I wasn’t sure if I should continue it or just go to regular tap. I will try the scrambled egg, thank you!
