Any commercial egg farms near you? Ask them to sell you some spent hens.

Sometimes the SPCA or animal control ends up with rescued birds when they raid rings, I can't imagine the roosters would make good pets, but they might have a few girls available if you can prove that they are not for fighting. A couple years ago our local law enforcement ended up with a lot of birds from a raid, I saw it on the news, I think the boys were put down and they tried to find homes for the girls. Good luck.
