Howdy BYC,
One of our fine hens, Dorothy, a suspected Rhode Island Red hen who is 1 year and 3 months old, was spotted having an abnormal right eye recently. It appears there a cloudy and hazy spot bordering the bottom of her pupil and iris along with some fluid discharge. We noticed this recently, so we're not sure how long this has been ongoing. Currently, we have not done anything to manage this, as we are not certain what this is. We suspect it could be cataracts, ocular Marek's disease, or possibly other bacterial infections.
In addition to this, she has been a bit rough for the past few months, as she has not been particularly active, often choosing to stay on the roost while the others are actively roaming around and avoiding interacting with the others. Additionally, she hasn't been particularly eager to greet us when we provide fresh greens for them. Her stools have also been watery and diarrhea-like, but otherwise unremarkable. Moreover, she has been dealing with bumblefoot for the past 3-4 months, though we have been doing our best to remove all the pus and promote healing. Besides the issues already mentioned, she doesn't have any bleeding/trauma. She's our biggest girl, and we believe her weight has mostly been stable as she eats the feed/water we've set out for them.
Otherwise, the other members of the flock seem to be doing mostly well. Their eyes are normal, though we did notice one time that one of the other hens had a piece of straw stuck in her eyes we were able to remove. The bedding used consists of pine straws and dried grasses/organic matter we collect.
We're not sure if her behavior is related to her eye condition, but we would like to find out what is causing the eye problem and what we can do to help her.
Attached below are pictures of her right eye, along with her normal left eye for comparison.
Thanks!
