Hello, I am new to chicken keeping but already enjoying it so much! We've been raising 4 silkies (1 showgirl) that are 8 weeks old and recently added a satin (5 months old) and Polish (3 months old) to our flock. The satin and polish are supposed to be pullets but I'd love some thoughts on the silkies and confirmations on the other two. Thank you so much!

To me your polish's crest and neck feathers and tail looks more male. We had 2 males (and now a third) and that's how they all looked. Female crests tend to be more rounded all over and typically block the eyes, without the whispy type plumage. I could be wrong though on it, but if it were ours I'd probably be leaning more toward cockerel.

The silkies (even the showgirl) are a little young still, all look like pullets (I think at that age if they were males the combs would be larger and they would already have streamers at that age coming in). They also seem to have squatty bodies which is very female in trait for them.

The satin is a little hard from the images provided. Can you get one that is a side profile? I want to say female, but just not sure.

Beautiful birds though.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate you taking a look!! I would be thrilled if all the silkies were pullets. I'll get another picture of the satin and keep an ear out for the polish haha

This is Jewel. She was born in April so she's about the same age as your buff polish. But the crest feathers form more of a poof that cover the eyes in the Polish females. All the males remind me more of the hair on the 80's rock band guys like Poison or Whitesnake (assuming your old enough to know who they are😂).

Oh she's beautiful! Yes I can see the difference now and too funny, absolutely like 80s hair metal haha. I feel like at 3 months we could expect the polish to start crowing now if cockarel..?

Thanks. She's a spas too😂, I think when they can't see it makes them crazier because they think everything is attacking them. They may start crowing that early. The one that is with them now that we have that's half polish he's started to get vocal (and he's an April baby too). And like I said I could be wrong. But it just makes me think male when I see yours. I'm going to get on my computer tomorrow and look through and see if I can find any pictures of our buff at that age (we thought he was a girl for a very long time, he was our first polish).

No I appreciate it and I do agree! Yes that makes sense about the vision, ours is certainly the most skittish out of the flock.

I tried to find a picture of our polish at that age but couldn't (they were all older). Sorry. But did find one of his daughter (she was a buff too) and she had the poof of a crest just like Jewel, but I didn't send because I wasn't sure what age she was in the pictures.
