I need to vent about what happened to one of my Guinea keets!

I need to get somethings off my chest & get it out of my head so to say! I have lost several birds before as I am only going in to my 2nd year owning chickens. But a friend had said to my Boyfriend that I need to not get so attached to my chickens like I have become attached. Backstory I'm 44 have never had children & never will (not by choice) so my chickens that I do have all have names & personalities! I get attached & care when something doesn't seem right & I'm on it. Even when I lost sisters Splish & Splash to a snake (Mother's Day '21) then another to him again just after 🤬. We've been lucky so far since. But I had.one of my Booted Bantam who seemed to showing signs of Coci, treated & she seemed to be getting better, but she finally passed, unfortunately it was my fault & she should have been treated for mites also 💔. Well now her daughter Silkie mix was showing the same symptoms..... Took her to the vet & he said nutrient deficiency, so we have made changes to their food & feeding Nutriana feed from my local Co-Op & they're doing much better. But I ended up losing another that seemed to have been a little further that I thought. 😕 Well know Tootsie is doing better, but she is batteling mites (powdered her in the normal spots & the other birds who she was living with) I can't help but not to get attached I mean they all have names & hatch dates.... So the little Guinea keet was found yesterday morning with string around her foot & neck we had to crawl in a little space with the use of a net & finally got him/her to get a really good look. She was coved in blood & still bleeding, we trimmed all of the string lose from her feet & in her neck. Brought her up to the NICU in the house, cleaned the wounds & sprayer them with Poultry care by MicrocynAH & gave he food & water
was going to shove some nutridrench down her gullet also, but waited just because she was in such shock. Well she started to warm up & she drank a little bit. But she was gone by about 9pm Oklahoma time. Well now things what made me cry as I was wrapping her in a potty pad that I use in the bottom of the Hospital beds, that I was able to finally really closely look at her body really close. Her poor spinal cord was exposed along with everything around it missing, & how bad they had started being picked on her back also 😔. I know I am mostly to blame, but then I am.also not the only one who's supposed to be helping, since he's right there! It could have been caught sooner... So that is why I'm so upset 😡. I know she was just a little keet we call them Goonie birds 🐦. I just can't vent on Facebook or any of the others. Thank you all for letting me Vent & I sure as HELL keep caring for my birds as mu babies, because that's what they are to me.

I raised kids. Trust me, it makes no difference. Someday I'll be able to look at pictures w/o tearing up over the ones I've lost, but not yet. I've held them after they've died telling them how sorry I am and walked the fields for days on end just looking for a feather -something, quietly pleading for them to come home. - And when a random feather has popped up in the coop, I've riled at God that it's NOT FUNNY.
You promise them & yourself that you'll learn more, watch closer, do better...and drive the gurus in here crazy w/incessant questions.
No one does for my goons but me (although he is getting used to having one inside), so all props and failures are on me.

:hugs So sorry about the little Keet.
Accidents happen and they can pick on each other quickly. Know that you did what you could for her.

Have you been able to get rid of the mites on all of your birds or are you still struggling with that? You may find that you need to use a Permethrin spray on wood/housing and nesting boxes and dust the birds. Do this in 7 day intervals to help break the life cycle.

I spray with neem oil when I clean and use on their feet. It can be used under feathers, I've been lucky, haven't had a need to. And good on you for offering solutions. 🤦‍♀️
Likewise, @Lilokieescorter -if you've got a snake, you've got an opening.
Definitely watch for traps-I've read many horror stories involving the string from feed bags. They're curious about everythi. We've been in the process of remodeling for 1000 yrs, so I'm constantly doing walk throughs to see what's been dropped or left behind. Pretty sure housing wld be cheaper if they'd just pick up all the nails they drop.
@Mixed flock enthusiast
had an issue last yr where the rest of the flock had a problem accepting a hen's hatch- or were just too immature to know how to treat them. And def an injured bird of any size is seen as a threat to the flock, so they'll attack it.
I usually keep my keets separate until they're older if I've hatched them. I let my hen hatch and keep hers last year, & it went very well. But, my flock was older & did well coparenting.
