Make them convenient for YOU to access. If you are in cold weather country, make them part of your foot print. Otherwise, if you want to, you can build them as a bump out. The little 4' area at the front of your coop would be an ideal spot, especially if you blocked that off to chicken access. The birds could enter the boxes from their side, you could collect eggs from the back end of the boxes.
