We just got our one day old chicks home and had a heat lamp all set up- and the power went out on our street! What else can we do for them? We are boiling water on the gas stove and going to put it in a jar with towels,m around it, any other ideas?

Do you know anyone who has a generator? Have any close friends on a different section of the power grid where they still have power?

How many chicks do you have? The best thing to do is to keep them close together/ in a space that's smaller so they can stay warm by their body heat (covering their ben with a blanket can be helpful too). As far as the boiling hot water, touch the surface that they might be touching. If after ten seconds (or shorter) it's too hot for you to touch, then it'll burn them.

With power outages, depending on where you're located and how many people are out in your area, I'd estimate a max of one hour without power. If it's not extremely cold and you keep your doors shut, they should be fine.
