Hi all,

I have a pair of ducks in an outdoor enclosure with some chickens.

One of the ducks got cut on a piece of metal in the coop. We set him up in a nice warm spot, gave him a heatlamp and tried to make him cozy to recover.

I set up a camera so I could keep an eye on him. The second night I check the camera and see a pack of rats feasting on where the cut was.

I ran out and stopped them. according to the camera it was only about 10 minutes but they at a good bit around the preening gland and the anus.

We cleaned him up, took him inside, and have been giving him nightly penicillin injections. I didn't notice until the second day though, he has a few inches of intestine dangling out and it doesn't look good.

He's in surprisingly good spirits and is eating drinking and very responsive, but I'm afraid this is the end.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you

That's not good! My first thought is cull. You don't know what diseases or possible bacteria he could have gotten from the rats, and with his intestines showing, all the worse. I don't know penicillin, but I'm assuming it's being effective and may be fighting off all the possible dangers. I'm suggesting stitches if he's doing well and is strong. I recommend having a professional put in stitches, but if you can't afford it and are willing to risk your duck of more possible infections and such, here's a post of someone doing stitches themselves:

Can you wash up the wounds with chlorhexidine, povidone Iodine or saline, then take some photos.
Hard to tell what's hanging out there. Is this a male or female Duck?

Personally, I'd consider culling, but sometimes a bird can recover from terrible wounds.
Keep the tissue moist with triple antibiotic ointment in between clean ups.
