It's a good idea to start them on layers feed a bit before they start laying. I'm led to believe it helps with those first few eggs. They don't necessarily build up a calcium store in their leg bones before their first egg which is what adult laying hens do.
A gradual transfer is best but they'll cope with a sudden change in feed mostly at that age.
