What to use to mark hatching eggs?

Any reason not to use crayon? That's what I have on hand, I can't imagine pencil markings would remain the whole duration of being brooded under a chicken. But I'd have to go to town to get a marker. Will crayon damage bloom? and will it last?

I've used a pencil. Not those hard #2, but the soft leaded ones. Turn it sideways and leave a broad black mark. I would not trust it lasting if you try to write on the egg instead of a broad line.

I've used crayons. Use a dark color, not yellow and not something egg shell colored.

I've probably used ink. When I was a kid over 60 years ago I used whatever was available and we used fountain pens in school for writing certain things so I probably tried ink too.

I now use a black Sharpie and have never had problems with that.
