Will this tree safe or will the chickens destroy it?

Dig it up now. The root mass needs to be at least to the drip line. That is, as wide as the tree branches. If you dig a smaller root mass, the tree will stop growing until the roots reach the drip line.

Glad I took those horticulture classes in college.
What is the drip line?

Thank you. Yesterday I saw something about a drip line, which I had never heard of before! lol!

The drip line is where the longest branches of the tree come out to. It is very obvious with an evergreen. The bottom branches are the longest. Rain will move from leaf to leaf (needle to needle) on its way down. When it comes to the outermost leaf, the rain has nowhere to go but down, so it drips down to the ground.
