I have an 8 month old hen that is rapidly losing her feathers on her head and neck. I have included a before photo from a month or two ago.

Do this look like she is molting? I checked for mites and everything looked fine. If not molting what else could it be?

Forecast calls for -15 degrees next week so not a good time to be losing feathers

It looks like an early molt to me.
My flock has 4 out of 18 young birds also molting this year.

There have been a lot of birds molting under a year old this year. I guess it's just a weird year.

My first 3 chickens all had a partial molt their first winter, and they were hatched in March, so about 9 months old.

They lost feathers on their head, especially.

I have 2 young pullets about 4 to 5 month old and one 11 month old. I have not seen the 11 month molting and the other 2 young one should be laying but have not yet.

I have 2 chickens soon 4 years old and they are molting real bad. Neck, chest, back and butt no feathers. Poor ladies having all that feathers coming back in. One is already done and the other is half through.

I guess a weird year in general.

I'm glad I saw this thread. I have a 9-month old flock and just noticed today that one of the Golden Comets looked pitiful.
None of the other chickens look like her (but maybe some loose feathers on some of them? It could just be suggestive thinking at this point.)
She looks perky otherwise. I'd like to add that she is fairly low in the pecking order, if that matters.
So, molting or should I freak out?
