Yes, Teflon, or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), can be dangerous to birds. When heated to 530° F (280° Celsius) or higher, PTFE-coated non-stick cookware and other products release a clear, odorless gas that is toxic to birds. Birds are more susceptible to PTFE poisoning because they have a highly efficient respiratory system and are sensitive to inhaled toxins.

Yes, birds can have seizures from Teflon poisoning. Other signs of Teflon poisoning include:

Agitation, Rapid or labored breathing, Wheezing, Incoordination, Seisures, Weakness, Coma, Lethargy. Depression, and Anxious behavior.

In January we purchased new expensive cook ware that had something not called teflon. Before we had been using Stainless Steel. Our bird would frequent the kitchen and family room.

When we started using what we were told was not Teflon the bird avoided the kitchen and family room.

When he entered he would begin to have lethargy, weakness in coordination and eventually a seizure which prompted us to carry him to the ER.

They could find anything wrong with him.

We Googled the cookware and it came back that it truly was Teflon. The manufacturer had just changed the name.

We removed the Teflon and the bird returned to normal behavior. It is our belief that Teflon even at low to mid temperatures is deadly to your pets and probably us.

Hope this helps anyone that is having unusual behavior in their pets while cooking with Teflon.

ALL nonstick cookware is Teflon.

It can kill your bird instantly.
