Good article, thanks! We had a large pile of decomposing granite/coarse sand from some trenching we did, and after reading this article I decided to use it in the chicken coop. Seems to be working great so far (well, first 2 days), and now I'm working on a way to sift it. Using it in a brooder and sifting with a screen seems to be a good idea too, so the next time I have chicks I'm going to give it a try.

Nice setup! I let my chicks see the big 'uns as early as 1 week, they were fully in the coop by 4. With my others I waited till they were 5 weeks before letting them in, but the result was pretty much the same. I'm very glad I introduced them early, it went much better than if they were older. Also, you have a beautiful flock!

I had to assist 3 of my chicks, this article truly saved them. One was head in the wrong end of the egg, one had excessive fluid coming out and couldn't breathe very well, and the last just got weak and stopped chirping. Many people seem to overreact about assisting chicks, and while I get there are risks, as long as you go slow and stop if you see ANY blood; you should be okay. Thank you again!

Thanks for this. It was very helpful and I tried helping my hen who had sour crop with miconazole. But she had a reproductive issue and died anyway. It's still something to keep in mind.

Also I had a turkey who had problems with pendulous crop. She wore a crop bra for a while, but it never seemed to pull it tight enough. We decided to cull her in the end because her crop was always so full and she was a BBW, a bird destined for the table anyway. In all honesty we probably should've done it sooner because of the nature of that breed, but that was in the beginning of my poultry keeping experience.
