Here is our run during the winter months. Most days the chickens free range . The pop door locks up at night and my two little goats stay in the run, in the red box during the nights. We unroll a large round bale of hay inside the run every winter. Keeps them off the muddy, icy ground. It also is several inches thick so the ground does not freeze, thus...bugs and worms are under the hay. Plus since we use hay there are still lots of seeds to scratch for. Some seeds still manage to sprout in very early spring for them to have fresh greens. It decomposes beautifully by next next year. Plus it gives my goats some grass/hay to eat while in the run.
