Hens Passing Away Due to Old Age: What to Expect

My eldest flock member is about to be 4 years old. I'm thinking and hoping she'll make it at least another 4. Thank you to everyone who cares so much for their chickens, to give them a happy life and peaceful death.
I just like the article. It’s not relevant to many chicken keepers but it is relevant to me. I have older chickens and a couple have already withdrawn from their tribes a bit, preferring a quiet life.
Very nicely written article concerning one of life's natural processes. To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven also applies to the chickens in our lives. I have hens that are almost 4 years old now and starting to slow down. A few are thinner than the others. Doubly painful is that they are my Marek's survivors and they have survived this horrible disease in time to get old and die. But at least I know now what to expect from my gentle Buff O's as they toddle into their senior years.

Many thanks.

An important subject, not one poultry lovers like to dwell on, but good to be prepared for.

A nice article that should lend some comfort to readers when they have a hen pass away of old age.
We’re getting to the stage where this will probably be happening. Thanks so much.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I have a couple of older ladies I keep a close eye on now I have a couple more things to help me prepare for their home journey.

What a nice article. I've had a number of hens that have gone through these stages and never thought it might be age because they weren't that old. Perhaps it was. thanks

Good article, but I thought hens lived 10-12 years before being old? We had chickens on our farm growing up and they did not live long. This is my first time raising my own chickens, but I have read 10-12 years is what they live if well cared for. These chickens are like pets and receive excellent care. Is that really not the norm?
What a great source of information and with those of us who have elderly hens and know the time is coming it's a sweet way of looking at death. Thank you
