This treat is perfect for entertaining your flock and encouraging them to forage.
Ingredients:
Dried mealworms | Oyster shell | Growers pellets and/or chick crumb | Split maize/cracked corn |
You'll also need:
- A measuring cup (I use a normal paper cup)
- A bowl or container
- optional extra ingredients (eg. Dried veg, sunflower seeds, layers pellets)
Method:
Add 2 cups of Oyster shell.
Add a cup of growers pellets/chick crumb
Mix, then add 1/2 cup of mealworms
Mix again and add a cup of split maize. This is also the time to add any optional extras.
Mix the whole thing well and either put in a container for later or put in a feeding bowl.
Serve! I have put some in their coop treat bowl, and sprinkled it outside for them to forage.
Nutritional Analysis:
This treat is especially good for winter aafternoons. It's high in protein and fat, which keeps them warm and helps their molts.
Disclaimer: Do not feed in large quantities too often since it can make them too fat and lead to illness. Treats should only make up 10% of a chicken's diet.
Purposes for each ingredient:
- Oyster shell- Calcium for strong eggs
- Mealworms- Protein and to make the treat tastier
- Growers pellets- Protein and if you have a mixed age flock
- Corn- warmth/fat
