Coop de View

Coop de View is a chicken fortress. A 10' x 10' coop with a 3.5' x 7.5' work/storage area and about a 350sf pen (it's irregularly shaped). We stick built it ourselves using as many recycled and inexpensive products as we could find. The costs ran about $3200.   Thanks to everyone here at BYC who has taken the time to put your coop designs and pics here. For me it's been the best source of ideas by far for my design and inspired me to keep a pictoral journal of our build. And thanks to my smart and capable husband who had only an inkling (true for the rest of us... read more

My coop in the AZ sun!

This my first coop which I think will be a continual work in progress. Over all the coop and run is 4' x 8' and the coop portion is 3' x 4' with a 1' x 3' nesting box pop out. I hope you like it.   Material: The wood I used are 2x3's. I drilled lots of counter sunk holes for the screws that went through the thicker part of the boards. If you look closely you can see pairs of holes everywhere that I did this. I used 3" decking screws for the framing and 1-1/2" screws for the fincing attachment and siding.               The top... read more

Rollout Nests

Many of you have gotten my plans for a 2 unit rollout nest box and I have talked with several others about how to modify the plan to make it even larger.  I have been using a box that has 6 nests and for the past year it has worked beautifully.  Recently I have noticed several birds trying to pull eggs back inside their nest and even though it's hard to believe that they can reach under the partition to get the eggs, several birds have managed it and have turned into egg eaters.  After much thought I have redesigned the nest box so that the eggs travel much... read more

converted dog house

This was a dog house I got from a friend.  It was a 3 dog house.  It had 3 entry doors and was divided by 2 walls leaving 3 living areas.  I knocked off the front then knocked out the dividing walls to creaet one large area.  Theres 3 nesting boxes in there and 3 roosting poles (2x4s).  So i put 1 hinged door on the front with 1 entry point.  There are 2 16x8 vents in there also.  The whole coop is from scrap wood which was free.  I have like $16 in it.  1lb screws $8, 2 vents $4, and 2 hinges $4.     read more

Eco-friendly coop

Why shouldn't the coop have its very own rain barrel?!    Coop before we attached the run.      Coop with the run attached. We used and old dog house we found for the coop's frame and then covered it all with recycled fence post. We really like the way the rustic look fits in our backyard. And, of course, a picture of our three ladies! read more

Chick N' Box

This is My simple, low cost nice brooder I just made as soon I my brother drove me to Campbell's. I had this box and I was saving it for the special day to set it up. Before my chicks hatch I will put news paper on top of the bedding so the chicks don't eat it. I used some left over hamster bedding from Alice and put about two inches on the box. I cut off the flaps on the sides and made a little square to put the feeder/waterer on it so it on even ground. I'm pretty sure the chicks can't get spraddle leg from that. My little sister Rose picked out green for the... read more

Silkie palace

well we have been working on this coop for a littel while now. and are still working on it. We made it so it can be an open air coop in the summer we need that here in texas but can also be closed up in the winter. all the windows are covered with hardware cloth. the windows open at an angle so that they still receive protection from rain , wind and excessive sun, which can be pretty bad in the summer time. after crawling around in the old coop, and the mess of lots of shavings we decided to have wire floors with removeable clean out trays, we have 2 nest boxes per... read more

Funky Chicken Coop

Funky Chicken Coop Construction Or how I embraced the curve and became a plywood perv.     Standard disclaimer: Any project that involves the use of tools carries the potential for injury or death.  Use caution, and your safety equipment.  Read and follow all safety warnings and instructions provided by the manufacturer of your tools.  Lastly in the words of my middle school shop teacher Mr. Crane “Watch the snake so you don’t get bit”.   Tool List: Tape Measure Bevel Gauge (there’s tons of cuts that are just a touch off of 90... read more

2012 Chicken Coop Design

I'm trying to come up with a new coop design.  I enjoyed my first coop that I built, but have learned a few things that I'd like to incorporate into a new one.   Our homes' previous owners put in a dog kennel with a concrete floor and fenced with chain link. It is placed in the corner of our yard against a concrete block wall.  I'm thinking that this will be nicer than dirt to clean/maintain.   Here are a couple of ideas that I've been working on.   Coop No. 1   Coop No. 2   There isn't a whole lot of difference between the two.  The first... read more

The Palace

The Palace Chicken Coop     When my wife brought home 5 fluffy new friends in July of last year, I knew a chicken coop was in our future. I also wanted to design and build it myself as a fun exciting project. Little did I realize that 5 months go by very quickly when you move into a new house!   When I first started doing research on our new coop I spent a great deal of time on BYC looking for ideas and suggestions. I owe a great deal of credit to the following coop's as they formed the basis of my plans. Wichita "Cabin Coop" Cptbahama's... read more
