That looks like it "might" be a badger..... One VERY mean animal..... Can't really tell for sure.... was it about 3-4' long including tail ???
They have claws that will rip up about anything.... and teeth that will tear anything apart.... They are a fairly short animal...

No badgers in Va. - mink or perhaps a fisher depending upon size. Box trap baited with sardines/chicken/liver might just work.

Mink. I don't know how you'd trap it outside of water. Talk to someone around you that traps.
