Hi Corina, Yes that is pine wood shavings (that you can get at the feedstore) and that was Little Missys' house. She could not fly so I did not have to worry about her leaving that box. You for sure can use cardboard boxes for nest boxes, they are cheep and easy to get and when they get icky just toss them.
 
Thank you Susan! I was worried that the sawdust or wood shavings are enabling environment for fleas... Or is just when around have cats... Great idea with cardboard boxes! Thank you! I will make a bigger coop and will use this boxes for her nest
 
When I use the cardboard boxes I always sprinkle Poultry Dust under the nesting material to deter them pesky bugs.
