We are starting our first experience with chickens and are looking forward to it! we bought 2 RIR's, 2 Americunas / EE's, and 2 Barred Plinith Rocks from Orscheln's Farm supply. The gal at the counter was very helpful in determining the sex... she held the chick in her hands and when it settled down she rolled her hands over and held it until it calmed down again. she then opened her hands and the chick was on its back and had closed it's eyes like it was sleeping. she said that only the hens will stay on their backs and the roosters will struggle to turn back over.
it has been 3 weeks now and the chicks have easily tripled in size, the wings are growing well and put the roosting pole in when i seen they tended to sit on the feeder. I do have a shed i am converting to a hen house. would love to chat more but the kids need my fatherly attention.
